Getting around

Metlink operates Wellington’s trains and buses. The Hutt Valley, Johnsonville, and Kāpiti lines extend well beyond the CBD. For many inner suburbs, walking or cycling is often the fastest option. Wellington is compact and mostly flat along the waterfront, though the hill suburbs require some effort.

What to expect

Older character homes dominate the inner suburbs, many in need of draught-stopping and insulation work. Wellington is known for strong winds and cool winters, so check heating and insulation before signing any tenancy agreement.
