Popular flatting suburbs
Riccarton is the city’s most popular flatting suburb, sitting close to the University of Canterbury and packed with shops, cafés, and supermarkets. Addington has transformed into a trendy inner suburb with good café and bar culture. Merivale and St Albans attract professionals wanting a quieter, leafier setting. Sydenham offers affordable inner-city living with creative-industry neighbours.
Getting around
Environment Canterbury (ECan) Metro buses cover the whole city, with key routes running frequently through Riccarton, the CBD, and the eastern suburbs. Christchurch is also extremely flat, making it one of New Zealand’s best cycling cities, and the rebuilt CBD includes a growing network of protected cycleways.
What to expect
Expect a mix of pre-quake character homes, post-quake new builds, and apartment developments. Rental availability is generally better than in Auckland, giving tenants more time to find the right fit. Bond of two to four weeks is standard, and most landlords prefer a twelve-month tenancy.
