About FlatMatchr

Built for vigilant flatmates and the flats they actually want to live in.

FlatMatchr started with one frustrated question asked in a Greenlane house in 2025: why isn't there a proper flatmate site for New Zealand anymore? The popular flatmate platform Kiwis had quietly relied on for years had been taken down, and the whole rental scene scrambled. Listings scattered to Facebook groups and friend-of-a-friend chains. Finding the right flatmates suddenly felt like flat-hunting in 2007.

What was missing was a proper home for the vigilant flatmate hunt - people who actually care who they live with, not just where. People who read the listing, ask the awkward questions in the first message, and would rather wait another fortnight than move in with the wrong crowd.

“It started with one question while standing in a Greenlane house: why isn't there a proper flatmate site for NZ anymore?”

Through 2025 the idea sat with us, sharpened by every painful viewing and every group chat full of people we'd never actually want to flat with. In 2026 we started building. The brief was simple: make it feel like it was designed for New Zealand, because it is. Real NZ suburbs and postcodes, rent quoted in NZD per week, shared-cost calculators, and matching that respects the way Kiwis actually live, study, and shift between flats.

We honestly wish FlatMatchr had existed years ago - the kind of tool we'd have leaned on through every flat hunt, every bond chase, every “is this the right room?” second-guess. It didn't, so we built it. Free for flatmates and head tenants across NZ.

We take privacy seriously and we answer our own support emails. FlatMatchr is designed around the Information Privacy Principles of the Privacy Act 2020 - we collect only what we need, we tell you why we need it, and we never sell your data. Your flatmate search is your business.

Where we're going next

Our roadmap is shaped by the same vigilance: suburb-level market data (median weekly rents, time-to-let trends), reference tooling built on existing NZ verification services, and a lightweight compatibility quiz that goes beyond “do you smoke?”. If your last flat search felt harder than it should have, we want this one to feel easier.
